The joy of the Lord is foundational for service in the mission field. A person with true joy is realistic, and acknowledges the many areas of suffering. Further, the author points out that embracing an attitude of sacrifice provides strength in the midst of depression, stress, struggles with burnout, sacrificial service and even suffering. While the Chinese Church had learned to accept suffering and sacrifice as a daily part of discipleship, pursuing joy is also essential and will strengthen one’s resolve to serve the Lord.
